The Petroleum Institute was created in 2001 with aspirations to establish itself as a world-class institution in engineering in areas of significance to the oil and gas and the broader energy industries. The Petroleum Institute's sponsors and affiliates include major oil companies, including four of the five major oil companies in the world. The campus has modern instructional laboratories and classroom facilities and is now in the planning phase of three major research centers on its campus. The Petroleum Institute is an affiliate institute with Colorado School of Mines and in the process of signing working relationships and collaborations with other major universities and research institutions around the world to capitalize on joint collaborations and research areas of interest.
